When stitches sew, they tend to shrink in the direction of stitch travel, and in some cases they will "grow" opposite the direction of stitch travel.
The reasons for this are many. The most prominent reason is unstable fabric. The more stretch the fabric has, the more the stitches will shrink . This is one reason proper backing is critical.
Core can automatically increase the stitch length on the stitching to compensate for the shrinking that will occur
The setting will vary depending on the material, thread tension and backing. The best way to determine the value is to create the design, sew test it on as similar fabric as you can find to the actual job. If you get gaps in the embroidery, click those blocks and add compensation to close the gaps
